Alaska’s Treasures

An estimated 1,000 undocumented archives are held by museums, libraries, tribal repositories, and other cultural and civic institutions throughout Alaska. Currently, only 29 Alaskan archives are listed with the Heritage Health Index while the condition of many is unknown. It is ARC’s hope to help locate these unknown archives and provide them with the training and tools needed to preserve their collections. We plan on doing this by finding out the needs of collection holding institutions and assisting them by offering educational literature and training.

If you are concerned about the privacy and ownership of your collection see this letter from the director of Libraries, Archives, and Museums

ARC’s Goals

  • To help organizations and institutions provide safe conditions for their collections through partnership building, networking, training, and long range planning.
  • Identify not only collections in need, but responsible staff and/or volunteers capable of assisting in collections management and care.
  • Provide training for staff and volunteers which will assist them in developing emergency plans.
  • Create a grassroots network of volunteers throughout the state to assist in caring for these collections.

ARC's Mission Statement

To preserve Alaska's heritage and enlist others to help by providing tools and training.
